Five-Minute Friday: Same Word Showdown

One word. Multiple meanings. 5 minutes of laughter.

This week's Five-Minute Friday turns vocabulary into a family game that works just about anywhere. Play it around the dinner table, on a road trip, while waiting at a restaurant, or during a rainy afternoon at home.

As always, no prep required.

Why Play?

Strong readers don't memorize every word's definition. Instead, they use context to figure out which meaning makes sense.

Think about the word right.

• "You're right!" means correct.

• "Turn right" gives a direction.

• "Everyone has the right to speak" refers to a freedom.

  
  

Same word. Different meanings. That's exactly the kind of flexible thinking readers use every time they read.

How to Play

Step 1: Choose one word. Here are a few to get started!

• Right

• Light

• Watch

• Point

• Match

• Fair

• Cool

• Spring

• Ring

• Jam

• Bat

• Park

Step 2: Take turns using that word in a sentence until someone can’t think of one on their turn. Round over! 

Example - Word: Right

😀 "You're right. I forgot my backpack."

🧭 "Turn right at the next stop sign."

⚖️ "Everyone has the right to be heard."

📝 "You picked the right answer."

Bonus Challenge: Character Chain

Want to make it even funnier? The person before you chooses who you are. Then it's your turn to use the same word in a sentence as that character.

Example - Word: Light

👵 Grandma "Don't forget to turn on the porch light before it gets dark."

🤖 Robot "Warning: Battery light activated."

🏴‍☠️ Pirate "This treasure chest feels surprisingly light!"

🦸 Superhero "With one light-speed jump, the city was safe!"

🕵️ Detective "There's still one light on...someone's inside."

The next player chooses a new character for the person after them.
